AI Research & Engineering

Cyrine Chaabani

I am an AI Scientist at BMW, building large industrial foundation models for CAD/CAE workflows in the automotive industry. Previously, I was Co-founder & CTO at Wattzo, where we helped operators of industrial real-estate forecast, simulate and orchestrate distributed energy assets with ML and Agentic AI.

Before that I led AI delivery as a Technical AI Consultant at Allianz Technology / Trusteq, was Founding Lead AI/ML Engineer at Xaver (LLM + RAG assistants and personalization for financial products), and an Applied Scientist at Microsoft working on speech and sign-language understanding. I hold an Honors Degree in Technology Management from CDTM and an M.Sc. in Robotics, Cognition & Intelligence from the Technical University of Munich.

My work leverages foundation models for solving complex industrial tasks through specialization, agentic workflows and reinforcement learning. Beyond this, I am interested in knowledge representation, online learning and graph neural networks.

Always feel free to reach out with things you find exciting.

Founding Lead AI/ML Engineer, Xaver
03/2024 — 01/2025
Shipped an LLM + RAG chat assistant (95% resolution rate) and an adaptive customer-journey personalization engine that boosted conversion on financial products by +60%. Built fine-tuning and data-scraping pipelines, set up live agentic-architecture monitoring with Langfuse, and led AI hiring while mentoring junior engineers.
AI Lead & Program Manager, CDTM
08/2023 — 02/2024
Published on explainable generative AI for energy, led work on multi-agent optimization with transformer- and RL-based architectures, and taught product management, ideation and rapid prototyping to 50+ graduate students.
Applied Scientist — Speech & Sign Language, Microsoft
10/2021 — 07/2023
Developed grapheme-to-phoneme models for German and its dialects (+10% accuracy over the previous architecture). Built a real-time sign-language detection system (87% accuracy) using graph learning with bias-aware attention and a specialized loss, and a multimodal deep-learning system for sign-language detection that won the Best Model prize at WMT22.
AI Intern, IdealWorks
04/2021 — 08/2021
Leveraged ontologies to improve planning edge-cases for autonomous navigation of STR robots. Generated 4,000+ synthetic audio/visual training examples via Nvidia Isaac Sim and built data ingestion and evaluation tooling for continuous benchmarking.
ML Engineer, Motius
11/2019 — 04/2021
Delivered AI solutions across tabular classification, document understanding, automated information processing and visual defect detection (XGBoost, CNNs, LSTMs, ensembles, NLP). Acted as lead ML engineer on 5 multi-disciplinary R&D teams for clients including Henkel, OSRAM and the Ministry of Energy in Dubai, with a 100% delivery success rate.
Computer Vision & Robotics Intern, BMW
03/2019 — 11/2019
Built real-time RGB-D object detection (96% accuracy) and developed the vision component of a prototype robot that detects, grabs and relocates target objects (CNN-based detection, pixel-to-world coordinate translation, SLAM-based navigation).

Publications

1. Explainable Energy Communities with Generative AI
IEEE ISGT, 2024
Introduces a generative-AI interface for Renewable Energy Communities that enables natural-language queries over optimization and forecasting workflows. Demonstrates improved transparency and decision support in case studies of community energy management.
2. Signer Overlap in Sign Language Detection
Preprint, 2023
Shows that training/test signer overlap inflates performance in sign-language detection. Proposes non-overlapping splits and reports a measurable drop when overlap is removed, arguing for more realistic evaluation protocols.
3. Clean Text & Full-Body Transformer for Sign Language Translation
WMT22, 2022
Describes a system that couples full-body visual features with careful target-text cleaning to address large vocabulary and data scarcity in SLT. Achieves state-of-the-art results in the WMT'22 task with strong human evaluation.

Projects

Blog Summarizer MIT Sundai Club
04/25
Built Blog to Talking Head Video Generator. This repo transforms blog post content into engaging short videos featuring an AI talking head.
GenAI UX Best Practices BMW
10/24 - 02/25
Researched and defined UX/UI best practices for GenAI products and tools to boost their integration and ease-of-use for all categories of employees and for all use-cases. The efficacity of the then defined approach was proven through user-experiments and feedback.
Unbiased Cathode MIT Energy and Climate Hackathon
11/24
LLM-based co-pilot for battery material scientists that helps them quickly understand the supply-chain constraints (E, S and G) of the materials they are using in their experiments.
Konvolut CDTM
10/22 - 02/23
Built an ESG reporting co-pilot and early supply chain risk detector for SMEs. It relies on sentiment analysis from specialized data sources to detect any warning signs from known suppliers, as well as suggest potential alternatives. Additionally, it generates compliance reports seamlessly.
